A Visit to Gulf of Maine Gunsmithing

Heading up to Deer Isle, Maine today we just had to stop in along the way to see the legendary signs in front of Gulf of Maine Gunsmithing in the town of Raymond.

We were not disappointed.  Richard Baehr over at American Thinker, a fellow Maine traveler, has sent me photos of these signs before, but this was the first time I've actually been there myself.  I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, William Darling, Jr.  He doesn't have a website, use email or even own a computer.  The 'spider signs', the smaller portable ones he used to have out in front of his gun shop, like this, are now completely banned from display in town.  Businesses can no longer have them citing a 'safety hazard' for drivers on the road.  But really it's because there were some people in town who objected to his political messages.

Every week he puts up a new message on his one remaining sign. Long may the sign of William Darling, Jr. wave, long may she wave.

Another 'Supreme' Presidential Candidate for 2012

"Free Ponies for All"

Well, that pretty much sums up the Obama campaign as well.  This guy is serious.  About as seriously as you can take a candidate who wears a Merlin hat, that is.  And after all, who doesn't love ponies?

Political Street Vendor: Obama Supreme

Obama supreme? That's funny.  Supreme, yes.. as in supremely bad for America.  Or, I am praying to the Supreme Being that Obama loses in November.  Turns out 'Supreme' is a store for skate culture.  Hence the skateboard pictured in the background.  Skateboarders... okay. The tuned-out, counter culture is going to have a rude awakening when their idol loses the election because things are not looking too good for him right now.

There aren't any Obama street art or signs around here this time around.  Since there's no date on the t-shirts, I'm thinking they could just be recycled from '08.  And there's no 'Biden' either, nor an American flag--but that's already a given. Just 'Obama' over a Commie red color field.  Perfect.

The Empire State Building Turns Green to Mark the Last Day of Ramadan

A couple of shots of the Empire State Building lit green tonight for the last day of the Islamic holiday, Ramadan.

This is the same exact corner where I stood and watched the World Trade Center burn and collapse on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.  I could see the flames in the windows of the towers and the black smoke poured out like hell running over.

I was so glad that the Empire State Building was spared as a target that day for Islamic terrorism.  It's one of my favorite buildings and it is the heart of the New York City skyline.  At that time I worked a block away from it on 35th Street and Madison Avenue. For months after the attacks every time I saw it, I had visions of planes flying into it.
And whenever I walked under a tall building [which was every single day] I would wonder: What if it fell? Could I outrun it?

Anti-Baby Street Art

Well, I've seen a lot of oddball things around here and this is one of them.  Unsurprisingly there is a website.  I hate to give them any traffic, but there it is as a curiosity.  Self hatred is nothing new.  This is just the hipster version of the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement.

Political Street Food: Communist Dessert Chic

I came across this odd little street food vendor last month in my neighborhood travels.

The delicious-looking chocolate and farmer's cheese confection called Sirki was being offered by a place ironically named Iron Curtain which features pan-Soviet cuisine.  Poking around on the web I discovered that Sirki was a favorite childhood treat in Russia and that it [like pretty much everything else] had vanished from the stores during the Soviet era.

The vendor, who is from Russia and remembers the last gasps of the Soviet regime, said she was concerned about business because she felt that a lot of Americans hate Communism.  I said that we do, but it's also worth noting that within a scant year of Obama in power the head of the Communist Party of the USA at a three-day international conference of communist and worker's parties said, "There could not have been a better time to be a Communist in the U.S.A. than this.

Maybe Iron Curtain could cater the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
